The Soul of the Coffee Region: Why You Can’t Miss the RECUCA Experience in Quindío

Quindío is much more than dreamy green landscapes and wax palms that reach for the sky. The true heart of our region beats to the rhythm of the countryside, smells of fresh coffee in the mornings, and is adorned with the pride of the muleteer tradition. If you’re planning your next trip and wondering how to experience this legacy firsthand, there’s one must-see destination you should add to your itinerary: RECUCA.

Recuca is a coffee farm designed for you to have a blast while learning, firsthand, about the Paisa culture, the secrets of the bean, and authentic life on a Quindío farm.

Do you want to experience what it’s like to live on a typical Paisa coffee farm? You’ve come to the right place. At this beautiful farm, you’re not just a spectator; you become the protagonist of a story that has been feeding the world for decades.

A Magical Journey Guided by Experts

Guided by your hosts and the passionate members of their team, you’ll embark on a magical journey filled with culture, aroma, and flavor. What makes this place special is the warmth of its people. Each guide greets you with the iconic hospitality of the Quindío region, sharing their joy and love for the land from the very first moment.

Recuca, whose name means “Journey Through Coffee Culture,” is an interactive, profound, and sensory experience that encompasses everything involved in producing a cup of premium coffee. Here, you’ll understand that coffee doesn’t come from a bag at the supermarket, but from the effort, sweat, and love of thousands of farming families.

What is the experience like, step by step?

The tour takes you through all the stages of the coffee process, allowing you to interact with nature and tradition:

Planting and Harvesting: You’ll don the traditional coffee picker’s attire (chapolera or andariego), sling a basket around your waist, and head out into the coffee plantation. You’ll learn to identify the ripe beans that deserve to be picked and feel the weight of the work in the fields.

Processing and Drying: You’ll learn how the beans are pulped, washed, and undergo the delicate sun-drying process, a crucial step in preserving the flavor notes of the cup.

Roasting and Grinding: You’ll experience the incomparable aroma of coffee when it’s roasted by hand and how its texture changes when ground.

Cutting: At the end of the tour, you’ll learn the basic principles for tasting high-quality coffee, savoring a perfectly prepared cup.

During this fun-filled tour, you’ll also discover interesting and little-known details about the history of how this plant arrived in Colombia, the customs of the ever-curious and adventurous Paisa culture, and the enormous geopolitical and economic importance that coffee has had across the globe.

“It’s a tribute to the coffee picker and to the coffee-growing way of life,” says Luis Darío Orozco, the director and guide of the farm, with pride. And he’s absolutely right: it’s a space designed to celebrate and honor the hands of the farmers who rise early, following the rhythm of their mules, to harvest the “green gold” from our mountains.
